How to play · 13-card points

Eight steps, one hand: a closer reading of points rummy on betnow.

A mid-depth walkthrough that goes one step past the room card, into the moment of declaration.

Editorial close-up of a dealer's hands fanning cards across the felt, top card lifted to show a red seven of diamonds.
  1. The deal. 13 cards each, one face-up on the discard pile.
  2. The sort. Group by suit and by face value before you draw.
  3. The draw. Choose between the closed stock and the up-card.
  4. The first drop. Drop the card that gives the least away.
  5. The mid-hand read. Estimate the jokers in play and the suits running.
  6. The impure sequence. Build one run with the joker that closes it.
  7. The pure sequence. Build one run without jokers, mandatory for declaration.
  8. The show. Declare with one of each, pure, impure and set.

The mistake to avoid

Do not chase a second pure sequence when you already have one. The cost of a missed declaration on a marginal hand is usually higher than the cost of declaring with the impure sequence you have.
